JC Cut-Off Points for JAE 2026: What You Need to Know & How to Choose Wisely
With the GCE O-Level results being released on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, many students will be making one of the most important decisions of their academic journey — choosing the right post-secondary pathway.
For students considering the Junior College (JC) route, understanding cut-off points and how to plan your JAE choices strategically is key. Below, we break down the JC cut-off points for JAE 2026 and share practical admission tips to help you make informed, confident decisions.
🎓 What Is the JAE (Joint Admissions Exercise)?
The Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) is the centralised posting exercise in Singapore where eligible GCE O Level holders apply for polytechnic diploma courses (and also JC/MI/ITE). It’s organised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and runs right after O Level results are released in January 2026. You must use MOE’s JAE Internet System (JAE-IS) to submit your course choices online.
Key facts:
JAE 2026 application period: 14 Jan (4pm)–19 Jan 2026 (4.30pm).
Posting results released 3 Feb 2026 via the JAE-IS and SMS.
Eligible applicants include Singapore Citizens/PRs and international students (from MOE-recognised schools) with O Level results.

JC Cut-Off Points for JAE 2026
Cut-off points (COPs) refer to the net L1R5 score of the last student admitted into a particular JC and stream in the previous year. Lower COPs indicate higher competition.

Important Things to Remember About Cut-Off Points
COPs are not fixed guarantees — they can shift yearly depending on demand.
Meeting the COP does not automatically guarantee admission.
Singaporeans are prioritised over PRs and international students.
Popular JCs and streams tend to be more competitive, even at the same score.
🎓 JC Admission Requirements (JAE 2026)
📌 1. Academic Eligibility: L1R5 Aggregate
To be eligible for admission to a Junior College (JC) via JAE after your O Level results in 2026:
🧾 You must achieve a gross L1R5 aggregate score of 20 points or better.
L1 = First Language (usually English or Higher Mother Tongue)
R5 = Five Relevant subjects (a mix of Humanities, Mathematics, Science and other subjects)
A lower L1R5 score is better (e.g., 7 is stronger than 15).
👉 Minimum grades typically required include:
Pass in English (C6 or better),
Pass in Mathematics (D7 or better), and
Pass in Mother Tongue (usually D7 or better) — but specific requirements may vary slightly by institution.
✅ Net aggregate (after bonus points) is used to determine your posting in JAE. CCA bonus points and co-curricular achievements can reduce your aggregate score.
📌 2. Bonus Points That Improve Your Admission Chances
You can lower your net L1R5 score through bonus points, such as:
✔ CCA performance (e.g., Excellent or Good grades)
✔ Higher Mother Tongue with pass (can contribute bonus)
✔ Affiliated JC bonus points (if you have school affiliation)
✔ Some JCs offer extra bonus points for certain programmes (e.g., Language Elective Programmes)
These bonus points are subtracted from your gross L1R5 score to compute your net L1R5 for postings.
📌 3. Subject Requirements & Passing Grades
To qualify academically for JC admission:
📌 English Language — must be passed (typically C6 or better)
📌 Mathematics — a passing grade required
📌 Mother Tongue — a pass is typically needed (depends on the college’s requirement)
If you don’t meet the minimum subject pass grade, some colleges may offer conditional admission — but you will need to retake the subject in JC Year 1 and pass it to continue.
📌 4. Changes on the Horizon (From 2028)
From the 2028 JAE intake onwards, the admission calculation is planned to switch from L1R5 (6 subjects) to L1R4 (5 subjects), requiring an L1R4 gross aggregate score of 16 points or better for JC admission. However, this does not apply for JAE2026 yet — you’ll still use the L1R5 system for your 2026 application.
📌 5. Alternative Pathway: Direct School Admission (DSA-JC)
Some JCs also admit outstanding students through Direct School Admission for JC (DSA-JC) based on talents like:
Sports
Performing Arts
Leadership skills
Debating or academic strengths
If successful, DSA-JC offers guaranteed placement — but you still must meet JC minimum academic requirements (e.g., minimum L1R5 score) when your O Level results are released.
Admission Tips for Students Receiving O-Level Results
1️⃣ Don’t “Just Aim for the Lowest COP”
A lower cut-off does not always mean a better fit. Consider:
Teaching style
School culture
Subject support
Travel distance
Pace and academic intensity
The best JC is one where you can cope, grow, and thrive — not just survive.
2️⃣ Use a Balanced JAE Strategy (Dream–Target–Safety)
When filling in your 12 JAE choices:
Dream choices: Slightly below your net score
Target choices: Match your score
Safety choices: 1–2 points above your score
This reduces the risk of being posted to an unintended option.
3️⃣ Science vs Arts Stream: Choose Based on Strengths, Not Trends
JC Science is content-heavy and fast-paced.
Arts stream requires strong writing, argumentation, and reading skills.
Choose the stream where you are academically strongest, not where “everyone else is going”.
4️⃣ Consider Millennia Institute (MI) as a Valid Option
MI’s 3-year A-Level programme offers:
A gentler academic ramp-up
More time to build foundations
Strong support for students transitioning to A-Levels
For some students, MI can be a better long-term fit than a 2-year JC.
5️⃣ Attend JC Open Houses & Ask the Right Questions
When attending open houses, ask about:
Subject combination flexibility
Academic support & consultations
Promotion criteria
School culture & student life
These factors matter far more than rankings alone.
Final Words of Encouragement
Receiving your O-Level results can feel overwhelming — but remember:
👉 One score does not define your future.
👉 There are multiple paths to success.
👉 The “right” JC is the one that supports your growth.
Take time to reflect, seek guidance, and make a decision that aligns with your goals and strengths.
